ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir warned that inflation dynamics may force earlier-than-expected tightening. While no immediate action is expected at the upcoming meeting, the balance of risks has clearly shifted toward higher inflation.

Market pricing now reflects:

60% probability of a rate hike by June

35% probability of an additional hike by year-end

This shift has led to declines in German bond prices and a drop in the STOXX 600 index.

Kazimir also cautioned European governments against excessive fiscal support measures, citing fragile public finances.

Economists vs Market Divergence

According to Bloomberg surveys, economists expect the ECB to keep rates unchanged until at least 2027, contrasting sharply with market expectations of tightening to 2.5% by year-end.

This divergence stems from differing assumptions regarding the duration of the Iran conflict:

Economists: short-term impact

Markets: prolonged disruption and sustained energy inflation

Despite uncertainty, 80% of economists believe the ECB’s next move will be a rate hike rather than a cut, with inflation overshooting the 2% target seen as a greater risk than undershooting.

Outlook

The euro typically moves inversely to the U.S. dollar. For swing trading strategies, market expectations around rate hikes should remain a key driver of EUR positioning in the near term.
